Snap Art & Smoosh Paintings {candy corn colors}

After seeing Teach Preschool’s post on snap painting, on the spur of the moment decided we would try it too. I took her advice & we did ours outside! Recently I bought these trays at Target & they worked great for this {and so many other things!} I just put the rubber bands around it and slipped the paper underneath.
We found it was necessary to slide the paper around on the tray so all the paint could come in contact with the rubber bands. After trying out the snap painting, we still had a lot of paint on the paper so we “smooshed” another paper over top and made prints. Both versions are appealing! We’ll have to try this method of painting again.Snap Art PaintingsSnap Art Paintings 2

Boo! Ghost Smores {inspired by Pinterest}

I’m not a big fan of Halloween, but I do really like cute little projects like this! Perfect for my day care families, teachers, special neighbors & friends. Originally I found this idea on Pinterest, from Southern Vogue

To make a little smores kit, put 2 graham cracker squares in a bag with a Halloween Ghost Peep and a fun size Hershey’s bar. Tie with a ribbon & add a label if you like.ghost smoresghost smores 2

Fine Motor Activity Jars

My group has been very busy with these fine motor activity jars. I made one and it wasn’t enough, everyone wanted one!

Once I got started, I found a big variety of jars they could work with. I’m sure there’s more great ideas to be found out there, but these are what we have going now.

A two year old today, said “I’m so busy!” and he was, working so hard! It’s rewarding doing activities like this, even calming, besides building eye hand coordination, developing sorting skills and small hand muscles. I love to see the concentration!

The circles on top of the oatmeal canister could have been colored for sorting the colors to make it more challenging.

I was so impressed with the 15 month old figuring this out so quickly. He was a little fussy so I gave him the mayo jar and showed him what to do. It was all quiet. Next time I looked down, he had several in the jar!  Little smarty!!

I Can’t Resist {fall leaves}

Last Sunday I was “complaining” that the leaves weren’t very pretty this year. Damon said it’s because I don’t go anywhere and therefore don’t see them…true.  But even the tree in our front yard wasn’t very colorful. Then that night it rained and temps dropped. Now our tree is gorgeous. I’ve been enjoying it all week. I’m not sure if it was the rain, thunder, colder weather or the sun {all of the above??} that contributed, but now we have beautiful oranges and reds. I just can’t resist the opportunity to takes some pictures!

Flower Flutter & Dots Mobile

As you can tell, this mobile was difficult to name & difficult to take pictures of! It is very pretty though and I love it. The pictures don’t do it justice, with the cloudy days & location of this mobile – in a closet over the day care changing table.

I’ve had this in mind forever & finally got started on it. Once I started I couldn’t stop & finished it yesterday in between everything else instead of everything else? I should have been doing.

It’s made with paper shapes cut with punches or my Silhouette, beads, buttons, and circles cut from milk jugs. I wouldn’t recommend using your nice scrapbooking punch to do that – it’s pretty hard on it! They look neat though!

I hot glued the dowels together (had them from a craft kit we didn’t use) and then wrapped them with wire. I wrapped wire around the dowels and knotted the fishing line to them before threading and knotting the beads and paper shapes on the lines.  I probably should have spray painted the dowels and wires white but I didn’t take the time. It honesty really doesn’t matter and doesn’t show up much, but I could still do it.

I made these scrapbook paper covered canvases a while ago and they were bare until I decided how I wanted to finish them. They turned out mostly like I had in mind. The top one has cars & trucks on it, if you can make them out. The flower one has little plant stakes {from the Target dollar section in the spring} hot glued to it. I’ve had them laying around for a while now & realized they matched really well!mobile collage 2

The kids were awed by it when I changed them today. I can talk to them about the colors or blow on it a little and they’re distracted an entertained for a moment or two.

Play Dough Monsters @CraftPrjctIdeas

I received this great “Rainy Day Survival Kit” set of craft supplies free, from CraftProjectIdeas.com & Horizon Group.

We look forward to doing a lot more activities with these materials, but today, we made play dough monsters. I loved this idea that’s been circulating online on Pinterest, Teach Preschool, etc.  We did have a rainy morning so this was perfect with 9 boys today!

I really liked how the “stripey” pipe cleaners looked. Fun! Who knew they poked into play dough so nicely?

Sandwich Book Report

I’m so proud of Brett! He did his first book report. His assignment: choose a realistic fiction book, read, and make a “sandwich book report” during the month of October. We went to the library and he choose this book, My Side of the Mountain.

My Side of the Mountain Trilogy (My Side of the Mountain / On the Far Side of the Mountain / Frightful's Mountain)

At first he had a hard time getting into the book but because his book selection was approved by the teacher, I encouraged him to finish it. After he got into it a bit, he loved it. He says it’s the best book he’s ever read. There’s two more books in the trilogy so he’s excited to go to the library and get them.

bookreport

He turned in his book report yesterday and got his grade already. 30 points/30!  We did make him rewrite some sentences and think more about his answers but it was all his work. On to November’s book report: science fiction. He loves science fiction.

Treats in a Tin Can

Ever since I saw this idea, originally on Our Best Bites, I thought it was genius! Finally I got a time to try it out for my nephew’s 18th birthday. I really need to get a safety can opener though so the finished product looks nicer on the bottom & so I don’t cut my hand in two places next time!can collage

I look forward to making more, very fun!

A Special Visit

Today we stopped in to visit my Grandma. She was doing pretty good given her age of 95. While we were there, I saw this notebook for the first time. It’s old, like 100 years old. The cover says “JcPenny Co. & 4 cents”. In it her mother wrote poems and hymns. The last few pages tell about two of her little ones that died too soon. I thought it was really special. From the parts I read, I can tell she was special like my Grandma.

To my children one and all
To my children so dear
I will leave this book
Think of me kindly as on
These lines you look
Tho oft I have failed you
When my help you did need
Please read it o’er clearly
And to these words take heed.
