Nature Up Close|Bee in a Jar

Brett and the older kids have been catching bees in the garden in a glass jar. They let them go after a while, but they are fascinating to watch up close. The buzzing is really loud inside! This one is so big but it’s hard to really tell how big in the pictures. Brett put flowers {and a small feather} in the  jar for the bees and I thought it was so beautiful!bee in jar 3beeinjarbee in jar 2

Making it Worthwhile

I love to share ideas on my blog and emails like this shows me it’s worthwhile! Thanks for all the emails from my readers. I will try to keep up with replies and requests!

Hi there,
Just wanted to thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas in your blog.  I just recently stumbled upon it and happen to work at a pre-school so I am in the process of planning for the year.  Thanks to you we will share many new ideas for projects and activities onto the children. Only wish I had such a wonderful resource when I was raising my children 20 years ago.

That time of year again–football!

Life is always busy enough but extra busy August-October with football practices and games. Practices 3x/week before school starts. Then I think it’s down to two nights/wk plus games on Saturdays. We go to all we can. Wednesday pm we cut out early. It’s enough running that we considered not doing it again but it is good for Brett. Otherwise he’s home a lot and not getting out with other kids. It pushes him a little. We decided it’s good for him. He says he doesn’t want to go (it’s hard work and he sweats!) but once he’s there he really enjoys it. This year the games should be really fun now that the kids are older.

Last week I took Brett to practice for the first time.  Dad usually gets the honor and I get 1.5+ hrs of quiet time at home to get stuff done! He’s in the #4 practice jersey. I love seeing him do this drill:  Winking smileftball

I like to see him giving his all at practice. ftball 2He’s had this coach before and we all really like him. He’s a great guy, teacher and coach. Demanding and yet respectful at the same time. fb4ftball 3fbfb2Brett played running back. And that’s all I know about football. Because Brett told me.ftball 4ftball 5

These little guys are so cute! I finally got a couple pictures that show just how cute. They look so similar at first, but are really quite different.

Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Jar Printable

Recently a reader requested a printable for this jar. {Original post here} I hadn’t saved it, but decided it was time to update mine anyway, so I’m making the printable file for the Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! available as a printable. Some of the positive/negative behaviors listed are more specific to my group, but tried to make most of them general, so they could be used in any early childhood group. There’s also a blank page to create your own. If you have suggestions, let me know! I will add them. Thanks for the email {and your patience} Sarah @ Miss A’s Kindergarten!

Sweet Little Nest

My husband found this little nest in the garden under the tree. It must have fallen down. It’s so small and soft! I feel bad for the poor bird that has to start over. I’m always amazed at the beauty of a nest and the skill of a bird.nest 2Stacy

Outdoor Play Kitchen {Messy Fun!}

Today’s fun was setting up an outdoor play kitchen. I’ve been wanting to do this activity with my group forever & finally got to it! I put the older group in charge of setting up our kitchen. They moved tables, brought sand and water toys, helped arrange materials and fill the “sink”, which was their idea!
It’s a great way to clean out the pantry of odds and ends and use up things like: an odd amount of pancake mix, rice, stale chips, old sprinkles, outdated foods, handfuls of this & that. Also, my husband brought home some strange items that were being given away at work – boxed milk, canned applesauce, box of tomato soup. It’s true, it could be used, but some of it is unappealing! (I made him try the milk – he decided it wasn’t very good!)
The kids love playing with it and they “cooked” up lots of mixtures that ultimately went in the compost bin. We made a big mess and had lots of fun! I heard such things as “That feels neat!” “It actually smells good.” “It looks like….”
What was especially noticeable, was that it was fun and engaging, for a good two hours, for both the younger and the older kids. My group of eight ranged from {almost} 10 years down to 2 years old and they all enjoyed it. We started before lunch, took a lunch break, refilled ingredients and played again after lunch! A parent stopped by and noted “They’re so busy and serious!” They were. Rather quiet even, because they were busy working! We’ll be doing this again. It’s “super fun”!

Klout Perk|Moo Cards

I took advantage of the Klout Perk for free (other than shipping) Moo cards just for fun, and I’d have to say, I’m very impressed with them! The cards are very heavy & nicely printed. Easy to create too. I might have to order my day care business cards from them next time.

The day I bought13 pairs of flip flops

IMG_20120630_133934

It was the most interesting flip flop sale I’ve been to. This happened back in June. It was memorable in a strange kind of way. I was waiting in a super long line at ON and a young girl, about early 20's crashed into me. I turned around to see what was happening and she bumped into me again. Good thing I was kind of leaning against the counter. She looked normal other than bulging eyes.

She stood right up against me so I put my arm around her and asked her if she was ok~no. Did she have a condition? No. She huddled against me and stared ahead and said she couldn't see or stand up. I asked her if she was with anyone~no. As I was asking her name she passed out on me!

In the meantime a manager was calling 911. I said she's going, she's out! A guy came over and asked if we needed help, he's a medic. Good timing because she needed to lay down. He drug her to the front of the store a few feet and she woke up. Ambulance came and checked her out but she wasn't transported. I wonder if she possibly had a seizure.

It left me shaken! That was kind of a crazy random thing. I’m glad she appeared to be OK when I left. It also concerned me that with so many other people around no one seemed to have noticed or to be overly concerned. In all fairness, maybe she didn’t appear to have any symptoms until she got as far as the front of the line where I was. I’m sure there’s arguments for both sides, about whether you should get involved or not, but sometimes you don’t have a choice! And I was glad to help.

Good news: major haul on the $1 flip flops at ON for me, my sister and mostly, my niece. Really, I only kept 3 pairs!Stacy

Instagram Summer

It’s true, I’m completely into Instagram. It’s also true that Instagram pics look better in the app, but whatever. Summer is going fast, as always, but these little snapshots are evidence that I’ve had a great summer -- and it’s not over yet, let’s not rush it! It also shows it's the little moments that up to a great life.
